NHL Pharmacy Travel Clinic
NHL Pharmacy Travel Clinic has been running specialised travel clinics since 2001.
When you come for an appointment you will have a one-to-one consultation with one of our highly-qualified travel pharmacists or nurses. Our staff members have travelled widely and have good cultural and practical knowledge of most regions of the world.
We will ask for a detailed medical history and information about your trip so that we can work out:
- what vaccines you should receive
- whether you should take medication to prevent malaria
- Any other steps you should take to minimise the risk of you becoming ill while you are abroad
We have yellow fever vaccine in stock in NHL Pharmacy. These clinics run on Thursdays. Please call 01772 870 095 to book your appointment. The vaccine costs £60 and this should be paid in full when booking. This fee is non-refundable and there is no discount available on yellow fever vaccine.
Our registered Yellow Fever Centres are accredited by NaTHNaC. We provide risk assessment, vaccination, advice and a yellow fever certificate if you receive the vaccine. If it is not appropriate for you to receive the yellow fever vaccine on medical grounds, we can provide an exemption certificate.
Hajj and Umrah
We have plenty of experience vaccinating pilgrims travelling to perform Hajj and Umrah and our clinic is following recommendations from the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB). We can vaccinate you for Meningitis ACWY and give you the certificate required by Saudi Arabia for the visa. We can also offer other vaccines such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B and seasonal flu (at certain times of year) that are recommended by the Saudi Ministry of Health. Many of our staff have performed Hajj and are well placed to discuss questions you may have about your pilgrimage.
Travelling to Visit Friends or Relatives (VFR)?
If you are travelling to visit family or other people you know abroad you may have vaccination requirements that are different to people going on a simple holiday. We have a lot of experience in this area of travel medicine and can help to make sure you and your family travel safely.
Many trips abroad involve potential exposure to malaria from mosquitos carrying the disease. We can provide medication to prevent malaria that is appropriate for the area of the world you are visiting. We also make sure you know what steps to take to help avoid insect bites, including the use of WHO recommended insect repellents.
If you are up-to-date on your vaccinations and just need malaria medication, you can come directly to one of the pharmacies without an appointment and we can provide the medication you need. If you need malaria prevention for children, please make sure you know their current weight in kg. The NHS's website Fit For Travel has useful malaria maps to help you plan whether you need to consider taking malaria prevention medication.
Complex itineraries and people with special medical needs
Everyone we see has slightly different plans, timescales and requirements. We can help you if you are:
- Travelling to lots of different countries or parts of countries
- Planning an adventurous trip
- Working with NGOs, charities or volunteering
- Travelling abroad for a medical elective
- Going abroad for short-term or long-term work assignments, possibly at short notice
If you have special medical needs or pre-existing medical conditions, such as diabetes or HIV, you may have different health requirements from other travellers.
For people with complex itineraries or special medical needs we may suggest you book a double length appointment so that we have enough time to answer all your questions and make sure you have the best level of cover.
It is better to plan your travel vaccines with plenty of time before your departure date. There are still plenty of options if this is not possible. Work plans, last-minute special offers and family circumstances can all mean that you need to travel with little notice. Get in touch and we can help to make sure that you the best level of cover in the time available.
Please bring as much information as you can with you. We are happy to help you find information about your destination(s) if you are uncertain about the risks involved with travelling there.
We take a £10 deposit when booking an appointment – this is refunded from the cost of any vaccines or malaria medication you receive. The deposit is non-refundable if the appointment is cancelled less than 24 hours in advance.
If possible, please arrive a few minutes before your appointment time so that you can complete any relevant paperwork before the appointment starts.
Most vaccines are given to the upper arm, a little bit below the shoulder (top of the thigh in small babies). Please wear loose clothing that makes it easy to give the vaccine.
We have clinics at our pharmacies in the following locations with the usual day and times as follows. Please contact NHL Pharmacy directly to book your appointment.
