1. What is pantoprazole?

Pantoprazole falls under a category of medicines known as proton pump inhibitors and it is used to to treat  ulcers, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

The prescibed strength, how often it must be taken and duration of treatment can vary between patients so please always follow the instructions provided by the doctor and the pharmacy.

Pantoprazole 20mg is available to buy from pharmacies for patients over 18 for a maximum duration of use of four weeks. If symptoms do not improve after this, inform your doctor, Otherwise, a prescription is required.

2. Safety parameters

  • Do not take if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • Ages safe for use with a prescription: 12+. Ages safe for use when buying at a pharmacy: 18+.
  • Conditions relating to the liver may deem pantoprazole use unsafe.
  • Inform your doctor if you are due for an endoscopy as the medication will need to be reviewed.

3. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

This medication is NOT recommended when pregnant or breastfeeding. Please inform your doctor if you are planning to be pregnant, are pregnant or are breastfeeding.

4. Interaction with other medication

Pantoprazole may interact with other medication including rifampicin, HIV treatment, methotrexate, digoxin and warfarin. This is not an extensive list of interactions so please always tell the doctor and pharmacist every medication you are taking, which includes medication bought at any shop, over-the-counter medication, prescription-only medication, inhalers and patches. Also, please always inform the doctor or pharmacist if you start any treatment, change any treatment or have stopped any treatment within the last few years.

5. Side effects

  • The most common side effects are headache and diarrhoea.
  • Serious side effects include rash, stomach pain, pain when urinating, back pain and swollen ankles so if you experience any of the above, please report this immediately to a doctor.
  • Pantoprazole may cause dizziness or visual disturbances so if you experience these symptoms, please avoid driving or operating machinery.

This is not an extensive list so please always immediately inform the pharmacist or doctor if you experience any side effects while taking this medication.

6. What happens if you miss a dose?

If your dosage regimen is once a day, take the missed dose as soon as you can but if it's within 12 hours of the next due dose, skip it. Never double up on doses. If your dosage regimen is twice a day, take the missed dose as soon as you can but if it's within 4 hours of the next due dose, skip it. Never double up on doses.
